The write up and speak up competitions are designed to give members an
opportunity to refine their writing and public speaking skills. The competition
experience is invaluable and will give the competitor a greater understanding
and appreciation of the Jaycees
Requirements for write up include:
- Participation at district competitions. Registration occurs at the district
competition day.
- Each competitor will be given a subject and have 30 minutes to write long-hand
an essay.
- Top two competitors from each district will participate in state convention
competitions. Top scoring winner from this competition will represent Hawaii
at the national convention.
Requirements for the speak up include:
- 3-6 minute prepared speech, depending on category (Novice, Semi-Professional,
Professional)
- Completed entry form must be submitted to the competitions program manager at
the day of competition.
- Top 2 finalists from each district will compete at the state competitions at
the year-end convention.
- will be required to provide a impromptu speech at the
convention. Top two in each category will participate in a speak off, in which
only one will be selected to compete at national convention.

Armbruster/Andrew & Charlotte Mungenast Memorial Awards
C.William Brownfield Memorial Award: The C.William Brownfield
Memorial award is presented to a first year Jaycee in recognition of their
significant achievements during their first 12 months of membership. The award
is named in honor of the author of the Jaycee Creed. The Jaycee creed is recited
by Jaycees throughout the world at virtually every Jaycee function/event. As a
new member from Hawaii,
he recognized that the spirit and enthusiasm of the Jaycee movement began with
the exciting energy of first year Jaycees.
Top winner from this competition will represent Hawaii at national convention.
John H. Armbruster “Key man” Memorial Award: The John H.
Armbruster “Key man” Memorial award is presented to an outstanding Jaycee who
has continued to show support, dedication and enthusiasm for the Jaycees
following their first year of membership. The award is named in honor and
recognition of John H Armbruster’s faithful service to the United States
Jaycees. John was a charter member of the St. Louis Junior chamber of Commerce
and throughout his life continued to contribute to the Jaycee movement.
Top winner from this competition will represent Hawaii at national convention.
Edward Nakano Award (Outstanding Officer): The Edward Nakano Award is named after Mr. Edward Nakano who was a past president of the Leeward Oahu Jaycees. He was also the 30th president of the Hawaii Jaycees from 1972 to 1973. He did outstanding work during their service and were recognized for that service through this award to others who did the same.
Andrew & Charlotte Mungenast Award (Family of the Year): The
Andrew and Charlotte Mungenast Award is presented annually to one family from
the Minnesota Jaycees. The family then goes on to compete at the annual meeting
of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce where three outstanding families
are chosen. These are families who have promoted and exemplified the objectives
and beliefs of the Jaycee Creed. This award is named in honor of Andrew and
Charlotte Mungenast. Andrew was on of the founders of the United States Junior
Chamber of Commerce and served as its first secretary. His wife, Charlotte, was
known as the first lady of the Jaycees by the United States Junior Chamber and
Junior chamber International.
Top winner from this competition will represent Hawaii at national convention.
Rodney Miyamura Award (Director Of The Year): The Rodney Miyamura Award is named after Mr. Rodney Miyamura who was a director of the Ala Moana Jaycees. he showed great self improvement because of his involvement in the Jaycees. He was recognized for great service through this award to others who did the same.
Jaycee Debate Competition:
Requirements:
- Teams should be three Jaycees; they do not have to be from the same chapter
- The team will include two speakers and one coach or idea person
- Only one competitor may be a current state officer or chapter president. The
other two members must be general members, local chapter officers or eligible
state officers.
- You must register on the day of competition.
Each team will be given the topic fifteen minutes prior to competition. Teams
will argue opposite sides of the topic and a coin toss will be used to determine
which team will be able to choose their preferred side. Both teams are provided
with the topic at the same time and the team winning the right to choose either
“for” or “against” will be provided with two minutes to make their
determination. Different topics will be used for each round of competition and
may be either Jaycee or non Jaycee related.
Top team from this competition will represent Hawaii at national convention.
